This particular called us with a problem. She had a back yard but it wasn't very useable due to the slope! She was wondering if there was a way to increase the useable space for gardening as well as creating a method of pedestrian traffic to the back deck.
Upon our initial consultation and landscape site visit, we listened, we designed, we delivered. The landscape and stone design that we created called for a retaining wall in the back yard. This reinforced wall allowed us to install a walkway on top of it with sets of stairs making the grade transitions we required. We used a Keystone compac II block for the wall and a Belgard hollandstone paver for the walkway. We laid the paver on a 45 degree bias for interest. We created a more formal look to the walk by installing a Belgard Celtik curbing to both sides of the walkway. We used natural stone step treads for the stairs which tied the feel of the backyard into the wooded area directly behind the house.
Once all of the grading, wall, steps, walkway and curbing work was completed, the area was seeded and left for the homeowner to create her garden spaces.
